From Middle High German schramme, schramm, cognate to Old English scrama (cf. scramasax), Middle Dutch scramme, Dutch schram (scratch), Old Norse skráma (wound), Swedish skråma (scratch). Possibly related to Middle Irish screm, Welsh cramen (crust), Russian крома́ (kromá, crust), Latvian kri̇̀mst, Lithuanian krim̃sti (to gnaw).
