Etymology[edit]

First attested as Zeer Jans lant in 1573. Contracted compound of heer (lord), Jan (a personal name) and land (land). The name references Jan of Beaumont (ca. 1288-1356), who initiated the land reclamation project which the later settlement would be built on.
