Dutch
[edit]Etymology
[edit]First attested as Zeer Jans lant in 1573. Contracted compound of heer (“lord”), Jan (“a personal name”) and land (“land”). The name references Jan of Beaumont (ca. 1288-1356), who initiated the land reclamation project which the later settlement would be built on.
