Streit

German
Etymology
From Middle High German strīt, from Old High German strīt, from Proto-Germanic *strīdaz.
Pronunciation
Noun
Streit m (genitive Streites or Streits, plural Streite)
- quarrel, dispute, fight, argument
- Streit um des Kaisers Bart ― Quarrel about something unimportant (literally, “Dispute over the Kaiser's beard”)
- (archaic outside of compounds) fight, battle
Usage notes
- Neither of the existing plural forms is very common. In formal German, Streitigkeiten is normally used instead. Streite is listed in some dictionaries but is quite uncommon. The plural form Streits is a recent innovation (possibly on the model of Streiks) which has become somewhat common in colloquial German but is considered incorrect in formal style.
