German[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Old High German strīt.

Pronunciation[edit]

Noun[edit]

Streit m ‎(genitive Streits or Streites, plural Streite or Streits)

  1. quarrel, dispute, fight, argue
    Streit um des Kaisers Bart
Quarrel about something unimportant (lit. Dispute over the beard of the Kaiser)

Declension[edit]

Usage notes[edit]

  • Both existing plural forms are not really common. In formal German, Streitigkeiten is normally used instead. Streite is listed in some dictionaries, but is quite uncommon. Streits is a recent innovation (probably on the model of Streiks), which has become common in colloquial German, but would be considered incorrect in standard language.
