@BigDom: Hi, the word is rare. I'm not an expert in mining but this is the Russian definition of the term:

...простейшая, обычно ямообразная горная выработка, которая служит для вскрытия коренных п., залегающих непосредственно под растительным слоем, почвой и рыхлыми наносами мощн. до 0,5 м. Широко используются на всех стадиях поисковых и развед. работ, а также для взятия металлометрических и шлиховых проб.

I might translate that as "exploratory dig", a term which Google suggests is used in the context of prospecting for gold or other metals (disclaimer: I am not a mining expert). Tetromino (talk) 02:33, 3 May 2020 (UTC)
