Is it definitely from English or is this an assumption? It could be from Italian possibly or another language... — Hippietrail 13:42, 21 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- It is just an assumption, but its VERY likely to be from English - even if it was originally from another language, it could've been reborrowed or reinforced by the English word. --Vladisdead 13:48, 21 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- I've done it myself I guess but it's probably not the best for a dictionary as people are likely to treat us as an authority. We should probably use "probably from English" when we're making likely guesses I think. What do you think? — Hippietrail 14:03, 21 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- It'll have to do, until someone here gets a hold of an authoritive source for languages apart from English. --Vladisdead 14:06, 21 Sep 2004 (UTC)

- For posterity:
- The Japanese term is recorded consistently, in those Japanese dictionaries that indicate etymology, as coming from Dutch bier, not from English beer.
- For example, see the Daijirin entry here at Weblio, indicating 【オランダ bier】.
