If I understand this blogger correctly, they think 檨仔 is specifically Taiwanese. And this news article on Taiwanese mangos also uses that character combination; the character is not used stand-alone. This lends support to the hypothesis that in Japanese this character does not have the sense “mango”.  --Lambiam 09:45, 19 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
