Are you referring to the character etymology or the word etymology? 04:54, 12 October 2011 (UTC)

The character etymology (graphical significance). 05:07, 12 October 2011 (UTC)

Everyone seems to be saying something different regarding character etymologies.. 《字源谈趣》 thinks it resembles (polished) rice. "字源考釋" thinks it's candlelight and candlewick. Guo Moruo thinks it's a thumb, and the sense in ("first in ranking") came from this. 《汉字字源》 thinks it's pig skin being peeled.. 03:55, 13 October 2011 (UTC)
