Redundant to -rnus?

[edit]

I don't think we should have this. See -rnus. --Barytonesis (talk) 20:30, 29 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Barytonesis: The suffix -rnus does not explain the relevant -u- in alburnus, diuturnus, ‎nocturnus, and ‎taciturnus. — I.S.M.E.T.A. 21:15, 29 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
I'd add longiturnus to that list. De Vaan explains nocturnus by an earlier *noctū-rino- (cf. noctū). --Barytonesis (talk) 21:47, 29 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Barytonesis: The Oxford Latin Dictionary states that those four words all derive from -urnus, but if De Vaan traces nocturnus to a Proto-Italic *noctūrino-, I'm happy to concede that one. As for longiturnus, the derivation longus +‎ -urnus leaves the -it- element unexplained; there are other longit- words – viz. longitia, longitoria, and longitrorsus – that are similarly inexplicable, so I wouldn't say that longiturnus necessarily points to an enlargement of the form *-(i)turnus, but the derivation certainly isn't clear. — I.S.M.E.T.A. 23:03, 29 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
