Dutch, RFV-sense of Anne as a "male" or "unisex" name. Anne (and its many variants such as An, Ann, Anna, Annie and Anneke) is a well-established and often-used female given name in the Dutch language area (and it is often used in female compound names such as Annemarie, Annelies and Marianne). A recent edit changed it from a female name into a unisex name. As I have not met any men with this name, I am asking for verification for 1) male usage of this name, 2) male usage of this name, linked to the given etymology (a variant of Anna). - Ah ok, interesting, it seems to be a Frisian (and by extension a Dutch-Dutch) thing. It's very rare in Belgian-Dutch (happy to be proven wrong). Perhaps a label (chiefly Netherlands) for the male name is the right way forward. Morgengave (talk) 09:13, 18 January 2021 (UTC)
- Calling it a unisex name is mistaken. The male and female names have different etymologies. Compare the treatment of English Andrea with separate etymologies for the two sexes. The uses of English Jean are unified under one etymology, but still have separate senses as a female given name and a male given name. --Lambiam 14:19, 18 January 2021 (UTC)

- Yes, it is hardly an uncommon name for men in Frisia. [1] The West Frisian author Anne Wadman was a male specimen of this type, at least to the best of my knowledge.

- Yes, fine. I read on the Dutch Wikipedia that the cellist Anner Bylsma changed his birthname Anne because of the confusion it caused (presumably mostly abroad – "Mr. Bylsma, will you be abroad? – No! I will never be a broad!"). --Lambiam 23:22, 19 January 2021 (UTC)
