@Imetsia, GianWiki A search on Google Books apparently gives some isolated results from the 1990s and 2000s, but I don't get useful previews for these publications. - @Lingo Bingo Dingo: I guess the term has been used long before 2020, and maybe that's reason enough to remove the neologism label. I maybe feel a bit compelled too by the fact that Italian-language dictionaries have marked the word as a neologism from 2020. I don't really know how to resolve this, and I'm equally as happy with keeping as I am with removing the label. As for the second question, maybe mascherina? I find it interesting because it specifically refers to a mask held over the nose and mouth (compare masca which connotes any old mask, like one worn at Carnival celebrations) and therefore has a narrower meaning that the English mask. I also like tampone, which has always meant "swab," but is now more specifically understood as a "nasopharyngeal swab." In recent times, I've also seen it used, by autonomasia, to mean "coronavirus test." Imetsia (talk) 17:34, 21 November 2020 (UTC)
- @Imetsia Okay, I've set mascherina; the etymology may be a bit quotidian but the polysemy is really quite nice. One possible way to resolve the matter is by mentioning in the etymology or in a usage note that the word entered the general vocabulary in 2020/during the COVID pandemic.
