Etymology

"A corruption of ich ne reckon (“I don't reckon [so], I don't think [so]”) ... Arose as an expression in England's West Country."

So it's a corruption of a pronoun that barely survived in the West country until the 19th century, and a negation that only survives in oral tradition in rural Scotland/Northern England. Chinny reckon, I say.

From "d'ye nae reckon" seems a plausible corruption that doesn't combine obsolete dialects from opposite ends of the country. AlmostReadytoFly (talk) 10:34, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
