I can find a number of 21st-century medical texts that seem to use the word to mean "to (be able to) (independently?) walk, in contrast to a state where one is physically unable to walk". See [1] a mention in a discussion of politically correct labelling (translating Italian deambulanti); NSFW medical text conjoined twins who were successfully separated; [2] Parkinson's patients who "try to deambulate" but are better off in a wheelchair; [3] "non-deambulating" people who use wheelchairs.
