Is this just a British thing? Does down under make sense to people on the other side of the pond? --Dangherous 18:09, 22 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

The Ozzies themselves say "down under" too, don't they? Is it in a jocular mocking-the-Brits way? --Dangherous 18:12, 22 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
Sure we say it. Shrug. ---> Tooironic 12:48, 4 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
It's well known in the USA too. Soap (talk) 02:42, 18 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hell

[edit]

Can this ever be a euphemism for Hell? I grew up thinking it was, and even though I never used it myself, I was surprised it isn't in any dictionary. I don't remember who taught me that meaning. Soap (talk) 02:42, 18 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

I guess Im going to try to find cites for this, so I can add it myself, since nobody responded. It's possible though, since I was very young, that someone just made it up for the conversation in order to avoid saying "Hell". Soap (talk) 20:02, 28 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
I found nothing at all. I think my parents just made this up .... probably not literally the only ones ever to use it that way, but I don't think this merits inclusion. Even so, I may wish to expand our list of euphemisms of Hell with things like bad place. Soap 17:38, 9 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Having written almost the same comment yet again on my userpage I want to at least bring to the table what I have. I have a hard time with citations because of the UI but I have two clear use examples that are not puns or insults against Australia.

  • Sexting is the sending of explicit pornographic messages over mobile phones. It started around 2005 down under. Some say “down under” refers to Australia, but others say “down under” is hell.
Lifelines of Love - Page 80 Dr. Peter M. Kurowski · 2015
  • In Hebrew, hell is called shoal[sic], and it means “the grave.” That's why hell is referenced as being down or down under.
What the Bible Really Tells Us Adrian Benard · 2017
  • Adam is over there , or : look the other way that's where Adam is ; for all he would have us believe he may even be residing down under , in Hell .
Deutsche Vierteljahrsschrift für Literaturwissenschaft und Geistesgeschichte, 1977. Quite possibly quoting some other earlier work that was in English.
  • The view “outside” will catch your eye, drawing your mind to wonder as you travel “down under” in Hell, humanly experiencing luminous love revealing Your Life Story you TELL, transmitting emotions linking logicians eager to SELL, ...
The Game of Love/Life: Illuminating Your Own Universe Ronald Raymond Rocha · 2018

Last two are not quite noun phrases though. Soap 15:05, 10 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Noun?

[edit]

Isn't it a noun too?

It also refers to New Zealand. Wyang (talk) 23:36, 16 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
