This definition seems inaccurate. Comparing other dictionaries, the religious association is downplayed, elsewhere.

Also: This may be a folk etymology, but I thought fanatic = fan + -atic...not the other way around.

No, fan comes from fanatic. The word has always had religious connotations, coming as it does from Latin fanum ‘temple’. Widsith 06:36, 17 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
