Etymology[edit]

Shouldn't this be cognate with English to gain, French gagner, and Italian guadagnare, and consequently have the same origin?Matthias Buchmeier 16:49, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

gain and gagner look similar but are not cognates. They came from different roots. French gagner influenced the use of gain in Middle English, but that is the only connection. Instead, gagner is cognate with wide and Weide. —Stephen (Talk) 17:06, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
