[edit]Inherited from Vulgar Latin *wadaniāre, of Germanic origin; from Frankish *waiþanōjan, *waiþanōn (“to hunt, graze”) (a calque of Latin petere). Compare French gagner, Catalan guanyar, Portuguese ganhar, Galician gañar, Galician ganar, Galician gadaña, Galician gadañar, cf. also Spanish ganar and Spanish guadañar.
