Etymology[edit]

From earlier Old Catalan guadanyar, guasanyar, guaanyar, from a variant of Old Occitan gazanhar, gaaigniar, from Vulgar Latin *wadaniō, *wadaniāre of Germanic origin, from Frankish *waithanjan (get food), from Proto-Germanic *waiþanjaną. Cognate with Occitan ganhar, French gagner, Italian guadagnare; cf. also Spanish ganar.
