In English slang, this word is sometimes used to refer to the number sign itself. I found a (rather unduly condescending) Time article whose author seems to be under the impression that "hashtag" and "number sign" are synonymous after misunderstanding the distinction between hash sign and hashtag. He also suggests that "number sign" and "pound sign" are not "real" names for the symbol, which is asinine. Complaints aside, is it okay to add "number sign" as a second (slang) definition? Go for it. I've also heard and seen hashtag being used to refer to the hash symbol itself. Here's an example of confusion between the "#" symbol and hashtags. --Hugovk (talk) 09:37, 7 February 2015 (UTC)
