Cebuano borrowing?
[edit]@Mar vin kaiser Can't find this on Spanish-era dictionaries such as the Vocabulario de la lengua tagala, so this must be some mid-20th-century borrowing from Cebuano intended to replace siyudad, but with the semantic shift from "town" to "city" so to make it a false friend between Cebuano and Tagalog. True?--TagaSanPedroAko (talk) 07:40, 29 December 2021 (UTC)
- @TagaSanPedroAko: Yup. --Mar vin kaiser (talk) 09:15, 29 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Mar vin kaiser Sources? TagaSanPedroAko (talk) 09:18, 29 December 2021 (UTC)
- @TagaSanPedroAko: Panganiban lists "lungsod" as from Sb. (Cebuano) which meant "public town" in Sb. but "city" in Tagalog. --Mar vin kaiser (talk) 09:29, 29 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Mar vin kaiser: Cited, but what dictionary by Panganiban is it? 1966 Talahulugang Pilipino-Ingles or the 1973 Diksyunaryo-tesauro Pilipino-Ingles? TagaSanPedroAko (talk) 09:40, 29 December 2021 (UTC)
- @TagaSanPedroAko Not coined by Daluz in 1915.
- See this article here dated 1910:

- Although the "Samahan ng mga Mananagalog" may be a factor. Ysrael214 (talk) 07:38, 10 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Ysrael214: So who specifically introduced that? If who can't be determined, we can just say coined by the Samahan ng mga Mananagalog.

- @TagaSanPedroAko Not sure. I only guessed the Samahan factor since they seem revolutionary in the evolution of Tagalog and Google Books give results (in Tagalog) in years when they are formed already. But I have no solid proof that it really is them who borrowed the term to Tagalog and coincidence is still a possibility but it's still sure that it's a Visayan term. - @TagaSanPedroAko Though I don't think he coined it, he's still credited by historians here to have introduced it so okay maybe it's fine to keep?
