Etymology 3[edit]
Couldn't "reefer" (sometimes abbreviaed as reef) just come from Rif (same pronunciation), a Moroccan region where cannabis is a traditional production for local consumption and for export ? There were once many U.S. artists living in Tangiers, in Nortern Morocco, this could be an explanation, they probably knew where their cannabis came from. --Minorities observer (talk) 23:06, 28 October 2016 (UTC)
- Chambers lists it under the nautical etymology (to reef a sail, i.e. to roll it and tie down a portion): so perhaps it's from the appearance of being a large sheet rolled up. Also speculation. Equinox ◑ 23:09, 28 October 2016 (UTC)
