A french source gives the etymology as abrebiation of subscription receipt, a term used in finance in the eighteen century about loans (which you subscribe) - i.e. not directly from latin scriptus. Makes more sense in my eyes. Someone to check? --Diligent 15:18, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
