Francis Bacon quote[edit]
Samuel Johnson (1777), as well as Robert Gordon Latham (1876, whose work was "founded on" Johnson's) quote Francis Bacon as having said "Offensive wars for religion are seldom to be approved, unless they have some mixture of civil tithes." What Bacon actually wrote, according to editions of his work by William Oldys (1810), Basil Montagu (1841), Henry Bohn (1850), and James Spedding et al. (1963), is "civil titles".
