Eggcorn usage[edit]
I added an eggcorn sense to document cases where this is used in place of up-and-coming. Many more examples can be found by searching Google Books for "upcoming young", "upcoming actor", etc. However, I'm not sure that this is the best way to analyze such usage. Maybe it's a distinct but legitimate sense of "upcoming", or perhaps it could even be interpreted as the participle of the verb upcome (which we currently label as obsolete or dialectal). It's certainly not "Happening or appearing in the relatively near future", in any case.70.172.194.25 07:57, 16 January 2023 (UTC)
- I'm also not sure why the noun and (especially) adjective senses are present for etymology 2. I would have thought that the verb participle covered such usage. 70.172.194.25 08:01, 16 January 2023 (UTC)
