However, it's probably because the word gâteau, which for me is your stereotypical cake, actually has a larger extension than what I and Troll Control imagined in general, not because it somehow acquired a broader-than-usual meaning in this particular collocation. Google searches differ from person to person. For me, both of those searches only show images of what I would understand as "cake". Yes, it can be: "une vente de jonquilles et de chocolats", "une vente de gaufres", "une vente de crêpes, de sucettes et de produits péruviens", "une vente de colliers", "une vente de pralines", etc. But given the nature of those events, you're not going to sell just anything. Keep It's not obvious that vente de gâteaux would have a special meaning outside of a general sale of cake. A vente de gâteaux is a special fundraising event that is different from an ordinary cake sale. Languageseeker (talk) 00:29, 17 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Languageseeker: It doesn't have a special meaning; it is a general sale of bake/cake. It just happens that sales of cake often happen to be fundraising events, and that fundraising events often happen to involve bake/cake selling.
