Usage[edit]

This template may be used in the "References" section of an entry and on talk pages to provide a citation to the A New English Dictionary on Historical Principles (the Oxford English Dictionary; 1st edition, 1884–1928) and the Supplement and Bibliography volume of the Oxford English Dictionary (1st edition, 1933). It can be used to create a link to online versions of the Dictionary at the Internet Archive:

Links to archived versions of the Oxford English Dictionary
Volume Link Volume Link
I (A–B) VII (O–P)
II (C) VIII Part 1 (Q–R)
III (D–E) (pages 310–311) Part 2 (S–Sh)
IV (F–G) IX Part 1 (Si–St)
V (H–K) Part 2 (Su–Th)
VI Part 1 (L) X Part 1 (Ti–U)
Part 2 (M–N) Part 2 (V–Z)

Note: This version is of poor quality and has erratic pagination. Replace it with a better version if possible.

Parameters[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

1st edition (1884–1928)
  • |2= or |volume=mandatory: the volume of the Dictionary in which the entry appears in uppercase Roman numerals, from |volume=I to |volume=X.
  • |part=mandatory in some cases: volumes VI, VIII, IX, and X are each divided into two parts. Use this parameter to specify either |part=1 or |part=2.
  • |3= or |page=, or |pages= – the page number(s) of the Dictionary on which the entry appears. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to specify the page number that the template should link to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template link to an online version of the work.
Supplement and Bibliography volume (1933)
  • |2= or |volume=mandatory if quoting from the Supplement and Bibliography volume, specify |volume=Supplement.
  • |3= or |page=, or |pages= – the page number(s) of the Dictionary on which the entry appears. When quoting a range of pages, separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
  • |url= or |pageref= – as the webpage pagination of the version of the work currently available at the Internet Archive is erratic, the template is unable to automatically determine the webpage to link to. Thus, you must either:
    • use |url= to specify the URL of the webpage of the online version of the work to be linked to, like this: |url=https://archive.org/details/in.ernet.dli.2015.120834/page/n10/mode/1up; or
    • use |pageref= to specify the Internet Archive "page" to be linked to. For example, if the URL of the webpage to be linked to is https://archive.org/details/in.ernet.dli.2015.120834/page/n10/mode/1up, specify |pageref=10.
This parameter must be specified to have the template link to the online version of the work.
Both versions
  • |1= or |entry= – the entry in the Dictionary cited. If not specified, the name of the Wiktionary entry is used.
  • |part of speech= or |pos= – the part of speech of the entry. By default, the template italicizes the value assigned to the parameter and adds a full stop (period) to the end. To turn off the default formatting for the purpose of specifying a different formatting using wikitext markup and templates, for example: |part of speech=''sb.''{{sup|1}}, specify |noformat=1 or |noformat=yes: see the example below.
  • |4= or |column=, or |columns= – the column number(s) of the Dictionary cited. When quoting a range of columns, separate the columns of the range with an en dash, like this: |columns=1–2.
  • |5=, |text=, or |passage= – a passage quoted from the Dictionary.
  • |nodot= – by default, the template adds a full stop (period) at the end of the citation. To suppress this punctuation, use |nodot=1 or |nodot=yes.
