Template:en-surname

[edit]

What is the relationship of this template to {{en-surname}}? Which of the two templates would be preferable for English surnames? Also, {{en-surname}} puts the English surnames to Category:English surnames rather than Category:Surnames. --Daniel Polansky 14:00, 22 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Full language names or just prefixes in Surname categories ?

[edit]

Hmm, first lets clear up what we want de:Surnames or German:Surnames, and i get confused because i see Category:de:Surnames as being inside Category:Surnames but its not listed as subcategory there. Let's decide for one scheme and then also treat English the same like any other. I would prefer to use lang prefixes and have en:Surnames, de:Surnames, etc, all as subcategories of Surnames: Mutante 14:13, 22 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

There is also Category:de:Surnames and Category:German surnames. Lets decide which ones we keep and which we move. Mutante 14:18, 22 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

As Surnames is not a PoS heading, and a German Surname can be used in English I feel that Category:de:Surnames is the way to go. Conrad.Irwin 14:29, 22 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Category:German surnames is correct, as is Category:English surnames. Category:de:Surnames would be "German words about the topic of surnames". The word is a surname, not about surnames. Robert Ullmann 14:41, 22 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

This page does not have a language statement

[edit]

Using this approach to include a complete page in a template makes adding new pages really fast and easy but causes this minor problem: This page does not have a ==language== statement will be added to the pages by AutoFormat even though the heading is included.

This template should be subst:ed I have updated the example at the top of the page, this will fix the format - though it isn't ideal for usabilty (I know of no way around this problem at the moment) Conrad.Irwin 14:36, 22 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
The template has to be designed to be subst'd. (and should be called {{new surname}} or the like). {{surname}} shuld be the definition line template. All headers are required to be in the wikitext. Robert Ullmann 14:41, 22 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Didn't work

[edit]

I attempted to create a Norwegian section at Ruud. It didn't work very well. __meco 18:50, 8 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hmm, {{subst:surname|no}} should work. I'll give it a go. Conrad.Irwin 18:54, 8 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Now fixed. Conrad.Irwin 18:57, 8 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
If you applied {{subst:surname|no}}, that syntax does not conform to the documentation in this page. __meco 19:00, 8 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Surname

[edit]

Shouldn't this now use {{surname|lang=lang}}? Mglovesfun (talk) 16:54, 29 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

It seems the documentation is wrong. This template, when substed, creates an entire language section. {{surname}} is only the definition line. --WikiTiki89 23:29, 20 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Is there a reason to delete this that anyone can think of? Mglovesfun (talk) 22:12, 22 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
