Etymology

First attested as uersele around 1173. Derived from a compound of Middle Dutch varre (young bull) and Old Dutch sele (hall home). The element te (at, near) was added later. Compare Peursum, Poederoijen, Poeijers, Sterksel, Vaarle, Vaarsel, Varsen, Varssel, Varsselder, Varsseveld and Bolsele.
