Etymology[edit]

First attested as vrasle in 1242. Potentially a compound derived from Middle Dutch varse (young cow) and laar (intensively cultivated forest), replacing older lo (light forest) as the second component. Compare Peursum, Poederoijen, Poeijers, Sterksel, Vaarle, Vaarsel, Varsen, Varssel, Varsseveld, Ten Vorsel and Bolsele.
