Vietnamese

Etymology

[edit]

Non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese (fifth earthly branch, SV: thần). Some dictionaries (such as Thiều Chửu's) consider it as Sino-Vietnamese, but Thìn's /-in/ is unlikely to be a Sino-Vietnamese rhyme, compared to the likely one /-ən/ in thần. See also , Mẹo, Ngọ, Mùi.

Cognate with Northern Thai ᩈᩦ, ᦉᦲ (ṡii), Isan สี, Lao ສີ (), which /-n/ is lost.
