Etymology

[edit]

Non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese (SV: vị). Some dictionaries (such as Thiều Chửu's) consider it as Sino-Vietnamese, but the huyền tone is unlikely to be derived from the Middle Chinese departing tone and ui is unlikely to be a Sino-Vietnamese rhyme, compared to the likely tone and rhyme in vị. See also , Mẹo, Thìn, Ngọ.

Cognate with Northern Thai ᨾᩮᩢ᩠ᨯ or ᨾᩮ᩠ᨯ, ᦵᦙᧆ (med), Isan มด, Lao ມົດ (mot).
