Templates can be rather confusing because we have one, and sometimes more than one, for every thing. The most important templates to learn for etymologies are {{term/t}} (and {{term}} which is the same but with its parameters named differently), {{etyl}}, {{borrowed}}, {{compound}}, {{prefix}}, {{suffix}}, {{confix}} and {{blend}}. You will also often see {{l}}, which is similar to {{term/t}} but is meant to be used outside running text, like in lists and such.
