Etymology[edit]
First attested as dat tije in 1493. Compound of a toponym composed of Middle Dutch tië (“public meeting place in a village, place where law is spoken”) and either Ard (“a personal name”) or the personifying suffix -aard and hoek (“isolated place”). Named after a former farm.
