From Latin Tergeste, probably of (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Venetic origin. The first element, terg may have meant "market" (thus cognate to Albanian treg, Proto-Slavic *tъrgъ, Old Norse torg), and the second element, -est, may have meant "place".
