Etymology

From Middle High German elm, from Old High German elm, from Proto-Germanic *elmaz. The vocalism -u- is due to early influence by related Latin ulmus; compare already Old High German ulmboum alongside elmboum. Another vocalic variant was Middle High German ilm. See English elm for more.
