Etymology[edit]

Transliteration of Arabic داعش, an acronym of اَلدَّوْلَة اَلْإِسْلَامِيَّة فِي الْعِرَاق وَالشَّام (ad-dawlat al-ʾislāmiyya fī l-ʿirāq waš-šām, literally The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant). The forms Daesh and Da’esh refer to the same acronym but are transliterated differently.[1]
