[edit]Creating new entries
[edit]Main article: Wiktionary:Entry layout § List of headings; in particular, subsection § Headings after the definitions, which describes the order of the headings.
- Handy link for creating new (English) entries using pre-made templates based on the type of word: MediaWiki:Searchmenu-new
- How does one make it support Portuguese entries? Maybe creating something like Wiktionary:English entry templates? But in Wiktionary:Entry templates there are sections for English, French, Hebrew and Swedish, each linking to their own overview page in the Wiktionary namespace; then, in Category:Entry templates there's these four plus one page for Pubjabi; (there are many more language-specific subcategories, but many of them contain only the templates, not the overview page; and in any case, none of them are for Portuguese). And all the while, in MediaWiki:Searchmenu-new I only get "English", "American Sign Language" and Swedish in the dropdown menu 🤔... Needs further investigation.
- See also Help:Starting a new page
- Not sure why MediaWiki:Noexactmatch and Wiktionary:Project-Nogomatch are kept around (their talk pages have some discussion about that)
- MediaWiki:Newarticletext should probably be customized, to match the convenience of MediaWiki:Searchmenu-new
- Basic page template

Quotations
[edit]Quotation syntax quick reference
Generic example, using plain wikitext:
# Word definition. #* '''Year''', Author, ''Title'', Publisher, page ###: #*: Quotation including the '''word'''.
Specific example, using a template:
# Word definition.
#* {{quote-book | en |year = 1950 |author = Mark Twain |title = The Adventures of Tom Sawyer |page = 32 |text = Work consists of whatever a body is '''obliged''' to do, and that Play consists of whatever a body is not obliged to do.}}
Some useful citation templates (obtained from {{citation templates}}):
{{quote-av}}(audio-visual, e.g. TV){{quote-book}}{{quote-journal}}(any periodic publication: magazines, newspapers, academic journals, etc.){{quote-web}}

Personal to do
[edit]False friends
[edit]Goal: Expand Appendix:False friends between English and Portuguese.
- My own list
- pt:Apêndice:Falsos cognatos/Inglês
- pt:Categoria:Falso cognato (Inglês)
- Appendix:Glossary of false friends (has false friends between English and various languages, including Portuguese)
- Other false friends pages between English and Romance languages: French, Spanish and Italian (the words there are likely to exist for Portuguese as well)
- Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:U:pt:false friend
- Only one entry as of Aug 2023... maybe the mechanism should be different? Or should we add the template to all the pages in the appendix (once it is expanded)?

[edit]- Replace
{{inflection of|pt|...}}with{{pt-verb form of|...}}, as done here - Review Wiktionary:Beer parlour/2011/April#Restructuration of foreign languages
- Why isn't User talk:Conrad.Irwin/editor.js working for me?
- Propose adding a section for nouns in Wiktionary:Criteria for inclusion § Idiomatic phrases, to cover expressions with a "something" placeholder like give something a whirl, take something to the grave, or not touch something with a barge pole, as well as those with a "someone" placeholder like do someone one better or talk the ears off someone. See #Edit request: section for nouns in the Idiomatic phrases section.
- Create take someone up on, and link to it from take up
- Confirm that the instances with "one's" (e.g. scratch one's own itch, plant one's feet) all refer to expression where the action happens to the speaker.
- Raise Wiktionary talk:Thesaurus#Grouping *nyms - text labels vs. generic horizontal rule separators in one of the main discussion rooms for broader discussion.
