Welcome

[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary!

I'm not fluent in the languages you're editing in, but I've caught enough mistakes to make me think you're making things up or guessing- or worse, using machine translation like Google Translate (none of it is good enough for dictionary purposes). Editing in a language you don't know doesn't impress anyone, it just wastes the time of the people who do know it and misinforms the public. Also, there are lots of technical details that you have to pay attention to- use the links in our standard welcome template above to learn how to do things right.

You really need to improve your edits before much longer, or we may have to block you. Chuck Entz (talk) 22:25, 1 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Your German Entries

[edit]

Hey! I've noticed you created two German entries at Teufelshund and Großes Rig. I've listed both of them under rfv (request for verificaiton) because I'm unsure whether the definitions you provided meet our criteria for inclusion. Would you be able to provide your sources for these entries or add quotations to verify them? Thanks! Megathonic (talk) 19:20, 2 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi again, I fixed up your entires at Käferbiss (it is a noun, not a verb) and Zebrafisch. For a German noun, the forms for the nominative singular, genitive singular, and nominative plural need to be included as a minimum standard, along with the gender. Please read through the About German guide if you wish to edit in German. If you don't know what the genitive or nominative cases are and how they work in German, I would advise against editing in German until your knowledge of the language improves.
