Etymology[edit]

  • (Walcheren) First attested as valkenissa in 1219. Compound of Middle Dutch Valke (a personal name) and nisse (headland, spit). The settlement which the municipality was named after disappeared at some point during the Middle Ages; however, the toponym survives in the hamlets Groot-Valkenisse and Klein-Valkenisse.
  • (Zuid-Beveland) Named after a former fiefdom.
