Etymology[edit]

First attested as Valkenisse in the 18th century. Compound of groot (big, great) and a compound toponym derived from Middle Dutch Valke (a personal name) and nisse (headland, spit). The element groot was added to distinguish the settlement from Klein-Valkenisse.
