Etymology[edit]
First attested as Valkenisse in the 18th century. Compound of groot (“big, great”) and a compound toponym derived from Middle Dutch Valke (“a personal name”) and nisse (“headland, spit”). The element groot was added to distinguish the settlement from Klein-Valkenisse.
