From Old High German wāfan (compare Yiddish וואָפֿן (vofn)), from Proto-Germanic *wēpną. Akin to Dutch wapen, English weapon, Danish våben, Swedish vapen, Gothic 𐍅𐌴𐍀𐌽 (wēpn).
