Etymology
Partly inherited, partly a 19th-century borrowing from Middle High German wisent, from Old High German wisunt, wisant, from Proto-Germanic *wisundaz. Cognate with Middle Dutch wesent, Middle Low German wēsent, Old English weosend. Due to the learned origin, pronounced with a full vowel in the unstressed syllable. Doublet of Bison. See English bison for more.
