Etymology

From Old Saxon Wōdan, from Proto-Germanic *Wōdanaz. Cognate with English Woden, German Wotan, and Scandinavian Odin. The native Dutch Woen is rare as a simplex, but preserved in compounds like woensdag and toponyms like Woensdrecht.
