From Middle High German wolken, from Old High German wolkan, from Proto-West Germanic *wolkn, from Proto-Germanic *wulkną, from Proto-Indo-European *welg- (“moist; wet”). Cognates include German Wolke, Dutch wolk, English welkin, Proto-Slavic *volga, Albanian ulmej (“to wet, dampen”).
