Etymology[edit]

New Latin xeno- + -pus, from Ancient Greek, ξένος(xénos, foreign, strange) + πούς(poús, foot).

Coined by Johann Georg Wagler in Isis von Oken v.20, 1827, p726.

Proper noun[edit]

  1. A taxonomic genus within the family Pipidae – the clawed frogs. The best known species is Xenopus laevis, which is used as a model organism in scientific research.
