Etymology

[edit]

Acronym of yet another micronational organisation, originally referring to an intermicronational organisation (an organisation composed of micronations); perhaps by analogy with yet another (YA), programmer slang denoting unoriginality, and so-called for the abundance of short-lived micronational organisations.

First attested 2000 (see quotations), but ostensibly dates to circa 1998.[1]

Noun

[edit]

YAMO (plural YAMOs)

  1. (micronationalism, derogatory) An intermicronational organisation that is useless, unnecessary or deficient in some aspect; used to insult, or convey disapproval of, an intermicronational organisation.
    • 2000 March 28, Peter Ravn Rasmussen, “Nothing new under the Sun”, in Ignes Fatui[2], number 6, archived from the original on 27 February 2001:
In a series of clumsy announcements on the Yahoo! Micronationalism Club, a person by the name of John Bakersley has announced the formation of YAMO, this one called, variously, the "United MicroNations" (not to be confused with another one by that name, long ago defunct) [] This new venture seems to have no more significance than the many other YAMOs we have seen.
    • 2001 April 3, Lars Erik, “Y-A-M-O”, in The Micro-Nations Forum[3], archived from the original on 2001-04-25:
[See title] Some of us think we have heard it before - LoSS [League of Secessionist States], LoM [League of Micronations], United Micronations, SPUM [Splendid Micro-Union of Microstatia], etc. etc. etc.
    • 2002 October 18, Prince Kieran, “Micronation Disbanded - New, better?, organization founded”, in Imperial Republic of Shireroth forums[4]:
We are not attempting to create a YAMO or inter-micronational organization, nor are we in anyway trying to compete with micro-nations.org.
    • 2004 January 19, Kaiser Mors III, “Re: Fwa ha ha”, in Imperial Republic of Shireroth forums[5]:
Long ago when I made the name UEC it was exactly what I am suggesting right now. United Empire Confederation or something like that.. Made up of Kingdoms and other nations [] wouldn't that be grand... Uber Super-Power. Not a YAMO... But A kind of... Quasi-Merger.
    • 2005 March 15, Marjorie Boodlesmythe, “Inter-micro-national friendship and trust”, in Micro-nations.net[6]:
I would like to commend the King[sic] of Molossia and r [username utilised by Richard Shears] for their use of the regional expertise that the micronational community has, and agree that although this may seem a small effort, it could also be taken as the first step in a micronational union of sorts (without the YAMO issues, and actually useful).
    • 2006 May 20, Eskimo_Nell [Richard Shears], “Re: News from Talossa”, in Micro-Nations.com[7]:
I think the day of YAMOs is long past. LoSS tried to have some form of exclusivity, and the only result was that micronationalists went elsewhere. If people find our forum, and participate, then they [are] very welcome.
    • 2007 October 18, iehova, “M8”, in Micras forums[8]:
Most YAMOs fail because there's no purpose for them. Securing world peace? Nonsense! Everyone knows that conflict is good for activity, and furthermore, what's some YAMO going to do to to stop you, impose sanctions?
    • 2008 March 18, Hon. Most Rev. Dr. Cesidio Tallini, “LiveNations.net is born”, in fifth-world[9], Google Groups:
Nevertheless, I've started a new website which is not another YAMO, and that in fact exists solely to verify whether nations are alive or not. Why bother writing or contacting them if they are not? Time could be spent in a better way, right?
    • 2009 August 13, Maximos, “Re: International micronational Crime court”, in Micras forums[10]:
What's the point? This stinks of being one of the most useless YAMOs ever created – quite frankly, there are hardly ever enough micronational crime cases to ever merit the establishment of such an institution, which will most likely become a great black hole much community activity gets eaten up by.
    • 2010 February 3, Philip Fish, “Re: Sorry, but...”, in Imperial Republic of Shireroth forums[11]:
I hate YAMOs as much as anyone; the 5 minute forum and a MicroWiki page with "bringing all micronations together in peace and harmony" etc is painful to watch. BUT, and I wasn't expecting this, the OAM is actually active and we're different
    • 2011 April 19, George [Cruikshank], “NEWS: Micronational Development Union”, in List of Micronations Forum[12]:
argh! It seems we've been infected by the YAMO plague!
    • 2012 June 24, @UberstadtNews, Twitter[13]:
Organisation of United Micronations founded; shouts of YAMO begin
    • 2016 April 15, “The GUM is reviving!”, in MicroNews[14]:
The GUM [Grand Unified Micronational] ... has been officially restarted by HIM Jonathan I of Austenasia, President Kit McCarthy of Mcarthia, and a few others. i[sic] cant tell you much apart from the fact that its[sic] like a micronational UN [United Nations]. The actual UM [United Micronations] was very inactive and went YAMO.
    • 2017 October, Mark Kavanah [Lyra of Little Skovaji], “The Intermicronational Association: An introduction”, in Intermicronational Association[15], page 1:
The Intermicronational Association is a new intermicronational organisation being created to further the Intermicronational Community and to benefit participating micronations from across all communities. 'Why have we created a YAMO?', you might ask. 'What makes this any different to the GUM [Grand Unified Micronational]?' Or, you might ask, 'how does this work?'
    • 2019 March 30, u/HariusAwesome, “Birth of a new alliance!”, in r/micronations[16], Reddit:
saying it's a non-YAMO organisation doesn't make it not, i give this like a month before it disappears
    • 2020 June 3, @GaplaOfficial, Twitter[17]:
Yes, there are lots of annoying YAMOs. We will ignore them!
    • [2021 January 5, @Flandrensis_Gov, Twitter[18]:
Most organsations are called YAMO (Yet Another Micronational Organisation), some are convinced that creating a micronational UN is the best way to start diplomatic relations. In fact they spend more time and energy in others affairs instead of their own micronation.]
    • 2023 May 13, Olivier Martinez, “The evolution of YAMOs”, in Microcosme.info[19]:
For some time now, young micronationalists have been using new platforms such as "Discord". There are many more groups there today than on the traditional original Facebook network. It is therefore towards these new applications that YAMOs proliferate.
    • 2024 January 9, u/GradyTheCurn, “The Oligarch State of Curnon, The OSC is trying to expand its presence on Reddit!, DM this account or comment on this post if you are interested in Relations.”, in r/micronations[20], Reddit:
[Replying to "hey! would you be interested in joining the micronational peace alliance? dm me for more info if you want"] Sorry, but no. Curnon already has a policy for micronational war, and to be completely honest this seems like a YAMO
    1. (micronationalism, potentially derogatory, by extension, rare) Any intermicronational organisation.
      • 2007 August 20, Colonel Vilhelm, “Matbaa and Houland/UCE Edit”, in Micras forums[21]:
Guy, a bit of fun can be had with the HCE. I suggest you don't dissolve it just yet. I'm thinking Christian YAMO, HRE styled with Head of State Electors and terms of say... 6 months. I'll work on it some more and get back to you.
      • 2008 September 4, b3n|<3r|\|, “Re: Commonwealth idea”, in Imperial Republic of Shireroth forums[22]:
I'm just a Count, but I don't Shireroth is really interested in a YAMO or economic union. I thought this economic business was an extension of our Commonwealth with Batavia. And I was still hoping you'd recognise the Kaiser as Super-Duper-FigureHead of State. 🙂
      • 2010 February 13, Peter, “Does Lykosha have an imitator?”, in List of Micronations Forum[23]:
Hey, what's so special on this YAMO that made you all join?
      • 2021 July 27, @gdpikeland, Twitter[24]:
Pikeland is gauging interest in creating a new YAMO called the Southeastern Conference of Micronations or SECμ. Membership is limited to the areas that comprise the SEC.
