Etymology[edit]

Potentially attested as groot en klein zwtwike in 1390, attested with certainty as Zueck in 1526. Contraction of a compound of zuid (south, southern) and wijk (settlement, village). Compare Middelijk, Noordijk, Oostenrijk, Schadijk, Westrik, De Zoeke and Zoeke.
