From Arabic السُكَّر (as-sukkar), from Persian شکر (šakar), from Middle Persian 𐭱𐭪𐭥 (šakar), from Sanskrit शर्करा (śárkarā, “ground or candied sugar”, originally meaning “grit, gravel”), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱorkeh₂ (“gravel, boulder”).
