From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Latin ampelitis, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Ancient Greek from ἀμπελῖτις (ampelîtis, of or for vines), from ἄμπελος (ámpelos, vine).

ampelite (plural ampelites)

  1. (mineralogy) An earth abounding in pyrites, used by the ancients to kill insects, etc., on vines.
  2. (mineralogy) A carbonaceous alum schist.
