archegonium (plural archegonia)

  1. (botany) A multicellular reproductive structure that contains a large, non-motile gamete (egg cell), and within which an embryo will develop.

      On fertilization, the archegonia form obyriform calyptrae that are distinctly narrowed at base to form a stalk or peduncle; this does not occur in other Hepaticae.
